Why couldn’t I pay for the new iPhone per month?

So I was doing the ordering process and finally got through to the end on the Docomo site. When I got to the payment installments section, it said that I could only pay it all at once and not per month.

Does anyone know why this is? Honestly, this whole process of getting a new phone is a little infuriating compared to back home where it is so much easier.

I am even willing to look at other options on how to get the phone. On the Apple store, I tried to do it through Paidy, but it said payments could be up to 36 months! Which is too long for me. I would get the 13 pro, but the price has also gone up.

Any advice?

  1. Sounds like user error. When I reserved mine, every iphone 14 on docomo online shop page comes with 3 options: 2 year trade in, 12,24,36 monthly install, one time purchase plan. The 3 boxes are literally after you select mnp, new line, new phone

    You go into Apple store, pick a phone, and pay it at once. Done. I don’t think your home is easier than this. You are trying to get a credit — of course it’s complicated.

    Do you have contract with DoCoMo?

  3. I had a similar issue a few years ago with Docomo and upgrading my Android phone to a newer model. Because my Resident Card was set to expire within the payment plan period, they said I couldn’t use the payment options. I ended up just paying for the phone lump sum.

    Edit: I even tried in store, and got the same answer.

  4. It’s the foreigner tax. I’ve always had to pay for my phones in bulk. Many short term residents in Japan. If you have a one year visa, or less than a year on your visa, they’re not going to let you pay monthly.

  5. Go into an Apple store.

    Last year a friend got the newest iPhone and they paid for it across 12 months. The staff can help you work around problems

  6. weirdly this happened to me with the new pixel on the google site.
    I was like oh hey I can pay by the month, cool. but then…it just wouldn’t let me 🤔 I don’t get it

  7. I had this happen and asked support turned out because my residence card wasn’t registered or it was the old one (I forgot). I went to docomo shop to register it but staff offered to also give me same deal as online.

  8. Had the same problem recently buying a phone online. They don’t let you pay monthly because of the expiration of your visa. However, I do know someone who managed pay a phone monthly even though her visa is always just 1 year when she renews it. She went straight to the store and didn’t bother online.
