Vacation during study abroad ?

Hey, I hope this is the right subreddit. I wanted to ask those who have been at a Japanese language school:
How much vacation did you get during the stay ? Was it just the National holidays or were there more vacation days ?
Thank you.

  1. National holidays for sure — so that’s the New Year Holiday and Golden Week for the long ones, and then June is the only month currently that doesn’t have at least one holiday.

In my case, I did a summer program in Japan where we had one “mid-term” break that was a few days iirc. And then in the Sept-June program I did, we had a longer Christmas/New Year break as well as a sort of “spring break” in I think March or so.

But that part probably varies from school to school. At bare minimum, you should expect you’ll get the national holidays.

  2. I went to Yatomi Koukou near Nagoya when I was there in 2004.
There was a whole school trip for 2 weeks to Okinawa while I was there.
I, and the other exchange student, got to stay behind and clean the whole school for 2 weeks because they were worried that insurance wouldn’t cover exchange students.
We skipped school after the first day of cleaning because we didn’t feel like running up and down the hall ways on all fours with a dirty rag was an acceptable alternative to an Okinawan resort.

Anyway, we did get holidays as days off. Just don’t put too much hope into going on any long range field trips.
To be fair though, Yatomi highschool was a REALLY shitty school. Maybe some of the better, non-sports-oriented schools would actually try to bring their exchange students on field trips.
