How to send a letter to the US in Japan?

I’ve just moved to Japan, and it’s time to send my first letter, specifically to my family who lives in the US. I have no idea what I’m doing, so I could do with some help.

First, stamps. Where to purchase them, and how many would I need? This would be a small letter in a regular sized envelope, no heavy items, just paper.

Second, how to write the address. Can I write the US address in English, or does it need to be entirely in katakana? Can I write my return address in English, or should that be Japanese (my Kanji is lacking, so I still avoid it when I can lol). Could I just omit the return address entirely, considering this a letter that need not be returned? Or if there’s no return address, will they just not send it at all?

Or, are these questions fruitless, and should I be going to a post office?

I live in the Chiba prefecture of Tokyo and I don’t have a post office in my neck of the woods, just drop boxes. So I was hoping to use one of those. I’m also worried that if I go to a post office outside my immediate area, they won’t take my letter

Anyways, any advice regarding any of this?

EDIT: thank you guys for the advice! I’ll go to a post office closer to my university and have them help me out there. Thanks!
