Advice on staying in Japan as a young software dev

Hi everyone!

I’m 20 years old and have just landed my first job as a software developer in Barcelona, Spain. I’ve always dreamed of living in Japan, and I’d like to spend some time there to get a feel for what life would be like through some type of visa. I’d love to hear your experiences and advice on the best way for me to stay in Japan for a while in my situation.

My context: I don’t have a university degree, but I completed a 2-year specialization program in software development (which is common in Spain) and now work as a developer. My plan is to save up some money, gain more experience, and eventually find a way to stay in Japan for a period of time without just being on vacation.

I’m also very interested in becoming fluent in Japanese. However, I’d like to avoid language studying type visas since I’d prefer to get some income by working while improving my language skills because I'm not rich at all.

I’ve done some research and found a few potential options, but I’m not sure which would be the best fit for me:

  • Working Holiday Visa: I’ve heard about this visa, but I’m not sure if I’d be able to find a dev job before applying, or if the kinds of jobs available under this visa would be related to my field at all.
  • Study Visa / Scholarships: I’ve seen that there are scholarships to study in Japan, but I don’t know if my 2-year technical degree would qualify me to apply for university programs in Japan. Would a foreign-friendly university be possible with my qualifications? I have also a secondary school technology-oriented diploma by the way. I just after that decided to do a vocational software degree instead of uni.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has gone through something similar or who can share advice on the best ways to live and work in Japan for a while and explore life there more deeply than just as a tourist. Even if you're not on software context, I'll liketo hear your advice anyway.

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you can share!
