Cheap Whiskey Suggestions?

I see those giant 4L bottles at the Supermarket and Donkey, but have always been suspicious of them because of how cheap they are compared to say, Jack Daniels or other, but more expensive Japanese bottles.

Does the stellar reputation that Japan have when it comes to whiskey apply to those brands as well?

Do you have any suggestions for someone who likes Jack Daniels, but doesn’t want to break the bank?

  1. Jim Beam is about the best on the price/quality curve in the cheapo price range, in my estimation. (IMO JD is way overpriced… but then again I don’t like it very much to begin with.)

edit: 4 Roses is good too for a few hundred yennies more, but a little less available, at least around me.

The 4L bottles are ok for taking grease stains off your driveway, etc.

If you don’t mind other types of liquors, shochu and gin both have inexpensive offerings that are pretty good.

  2. The risk of going the cheap and voluminous route with alcohol is that you drink more to make up for the bad taste. Do what you will, but I recommend buying nicer stuff and drinking less of it 😉

  3. Jim beam is cheap and decent and likely will stay cheap because its owned by suntory (1100 yen or so)

Four roses yellow label is ok (1200 yen or so),

Wild turkey (the 40% version is around 2000 yen)

  4. Suntory whisky is fine if you’re mixing with coke, I wouldn’t really drink it on its own.. I always think “shouldn’t I just buy one of those giant ones..?” but ultimately never end up doing it.

  5. I see the initial euphoria of being in Japan has worn off and you’ve turned to booze. Welcome to the club son.
