I have an american Mastercard debit card and it’s my understanding that I should be able to use it at 7/11 and JP post office atms (tried both and also one at family mart), but they keep saying “card invalid”, anyone have any idea why this might be happening?
I notified my bank (they also told me I should be able to use it overseas) and everything before I left so I don’t know what’s going on.

This is why they tell new alts to bring cash.
I used to use an American bank card for emergencies & almost every time I needed to use it they would automatically cancel my card & issue a new one sent to my address overseas. Call them to see if this happened to you.
I’ve had the same issue; needed to find special SMBC Prestia ATMs for foreign cards.
7-11 worked for me, but it seems it doesn’t work for you. That’s unfortunate. Could you tell us where you are from? It might benefit people from your country in the future if the internet knows that cards from there are rejected by ATMs at 7-11 in Japan.
my bank of america visa card used to work at 7/11 when i first came here in 2018 but the past two years it doesn’t. If I need cash from that specific card a JP Post Bank ATM always works for it
Be sure to press [Credit] and not [Debit] when given the option even though you have a debit card. For some reason it’s regarded as credit, no idea why.
Check with whoever issued the card (maybe try the phone number on the back of the card). Sounds like it’s been locked.
