Going to Japanese Language school but original COE is lost in transit. Now what?

I’m going to a Japanese language school for one year. My school sent me the COE via EMS post and a tracking number. The last update I got was September 7th saying it left Japan. It has no further updates. I think the COE is lost at an airport somewhere. And it’s probably going to be lost forever.

I’m suppose to be in Japan by October 2nd. That gives me two weeks to work with. I called the embassy and was told they can give me the visa with just a copy but I will need to produce the original at immigration before they will let me into Japan.

Has anyone ever had an experience like this? I don’t think I will be able to produce the original because the document is lost in transit somewhere. Will immigration not let me in?

I already contacted my school about this and am waiting for a response from them. They’re not exactly very responsive. I usually have to email them twice to get a response so I’m trying my luck here on Reddit.

If anyone had an experience like this please share your experience. Anything helps. Thanks.

  1. Fortunately for me I got my CoE without issues but reading other people’s posts about their lost CoE, it looks like the entire process needs to be repeated unless your school advises otherwise.

Since this is an urgent matter, if you don’t have any contacts in Japan who can call the school for you, perhaps you could try calling them directly during office hours.

Have you tried using other tracking methods like [track24](https://track24.net) to make sure there really aren’t any more updates on where it might be?
