Question About Necessity of Changing Visa (Leaving JET)

I'm leaving JET very soon. My contract officially ends on August 4th, and I'm planning on staying in the country for one month afterward before returning to my home country.

My current visa (residence card) doesn't expire until 2025, and I read that even if your contract expires, you'll still be good to stay in Japan for a little while if your residence card expires later.

But I've recently been told that I must change my visa to a temporary visitor visa, even if my card expires a year later, because the work visa will be ending the day my contract ends.

So… which is it? Do I need to file to change my visa status? Or am I good to stay in Japan for another month with what I've got?

Any help is greatly appreciated!
