imagine how high the number would be if tourists where in the country (unrestricted, and in meaningful numbers).
i know i’ve got some manhole cover pictures from 2016 and 2018. probably would have taken more in 2020 had that trip actually happened.
One of the coolest things for me about visiting Japan (and there are A LOT of cool things) was seeing the different manhole covers around the various prefectures.
In my five years there, I collected 100 different manhole cover photos. People I was with were always amused at my drainspotting every time I took a side road through some little village.
The content of r/manholeporn is about 80% Japan, but some lovely public arts around the world.
