First time visit for World Expo 2025

So I am planning a trip to Japan woth my wife and 9yo son. This will be the first time any of us have been. The impetus for this trip is the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka, which seems like we'd spend about 2 days there. The whole trip would either be 1 week or 2 if i can get 2 weeks vacation in a row.

We obviously have many questions, one big one is where to stay. I've got enough Marriott points that we can use their deal of book 4 nights in a row, get the 5th free. Is it realistic to book a hotel in Tokyo for 5 nights and use that as a base for day trips? Should we book in Osaka and use that as the base? My wife and I would love to see some culture and history, without boring my son too much. I know he'd really like to get to the Ghibli Museum. He also loves the outdoors so depending on the season, we'd love to get to experience some natural areas. What is a shoulder season we could go with nice weather but not big crowds? Other than Cherry Blossoms, what are the big events to watch out for? I know this is so open ended, its hard to even give advice, so any info is super appreciated.
