「味がする」vs 「味わう」どう違いますか?

I’m studying for the N3 right now, and came across the word 味わう meaning “to taste.” I was wondering how this is different from 味がする which I also think means “to taste.” Are they used different?

  1. 味わう is to “taste” as in:

    He tasted the soup.

    They tasted defeat in the final game.

    She finally tasted freedom after years in prison.

    味をする is “taste” as in:

    This chocolate tastes like cheese for some reason.

  2. 味わうis a verb and it means to taste or experience something very intensely over a longer time, like enjoying good food or suffering from hardship.
    新鮮な魚を味わう
    病気の苦しみを味わう

    味がする is simply pointing out that one can detect a certain taste in most of its usages.
    この水は苦い味がする this water has a bitter taste
    このパンはメロンの味がしておいしい。this bread has amelon taste and is delicious.

  3. i tasted the strawberry

    that means i’m sticking out my tongue to evaluate the flavor of the strawberry

    the strawberry tasted bad

    this does *not* mean that the strawberry is sticking out it’s tongue to evaluate the flavor of bad

    the first is 味わう

    the second is 味がする

  4. For「味わう」, instead of translating it as just “to taste”, I also translate it as “to savor”, because it helps me remember that it can also be used with other things and not just food (i.e. savor defeat/success etc)
