I’m having some friends coming to visit me after Shōgatsu 2023. As I know it is slightly harder to entertain them during the holiday. Also, since traveling and tourist might be normalize again soon or by then.
I have some questions about the following weekend of Shōgatsu. Would some Japanese be taking extended holiday since it a three day work week? Does anyone knows if it busier with the first weekend of year? I would like some knowledge before Covid happened. As I thinking of taking them to skiing in Shiga. As I am wondering if full bookings and longer waits for the weekend?
Could anyone give me any input on this?

From what I saw in the past most Japanese people will be back in the office the day their official company holidays end (Jan. 4th or 5th for most). I wouldn’t expect it to be much busier than usual on the weekend after.
It’s a four day workweek and not many will be taking 4 days off take the entire week off. That being said the first weekend of 2023 is a 3-day weekend so you can expect sizable crowds at tourist places
The second Monday of January is always a national holiday. It’s also a long weekend.
