Japanese passport holder but not a resident. How to drive when I can’t get an international driving license? Have Indian license

I’ve never lived in Japan just have citizenship. I’m traveling to Japan in December with my mother she wants to go driving but since she’s getting older she was hoping I would be able to. However, I have an Indian driving license and I was under the assumption that I would be able to get an international driving license. Unfortunately last week I found out that I need a visa for the country I’m going to in order to get one. I found [this](https://vikashranjan55.com/2019/07/12/do-you-want-to-convert-your-indian-driving-license-to-a-japanese-drivers-license/) and I’m a bit hopeful, however I was wondering if there was anything else as we would like to rent a car immediately after finishing our quarantine.

I’m only going to Japan for a few months.

  1. If youre not a resident of Japan, the link you provided wouldn’t help as you wouldn’t be able to do the test.

Any reason you can’t get an IDP from your Regional Transport Offices where you are now? I’m assuming you’re in India.

  2. You don’t want to convert your license. If you have a valid Indian DL, it shouldn’t take too long to get a temporary international driver’s license. Find your local road transport authority and fill out form 4-A ‘Form for the Issue of International Driving Permit’.
