Yeah, this place uses a legal loophole in the Road Transport Vehicle Act. Go-carts are currently classified as both scooters and four-wheel cars. Scooter drivers in the country are not required to wear seatbelts, and drivers of cars don’t need a helmet. The license thing is bonkers! I thought it would be on the top of their checklist.

The key point is that the driver needs to have an international driver license that valid in Japan. The problem was the drivers had international license but from a country that Japan didn’t recognize as an international license.
If the driver hasn’t gotten into an accident, the police won’t have known this. I think the police now will be cracking down for a few weeks on international drivers.
I was amazed this was allowed to go on for as long as it did.

I had an internet friend visiting from Hawaii who asked me about the go-karts because her husband and friend were interested. I said “how do you feel about tourists in Hawaii doing the Segway tours?” They didn’t do it.
Holy based. I detest these stupid go karts around Tokyo and I imagine absolutely everyone else does. It’s always obese Americans sat in them too exerting their obnoxious influence everywhere they go.

I’m from the US. When I went to Japan for the first time about 8 years ago, this was the first thing I did. Amazing experience and would do again. Highly recommend it.
