Rent Prices in Tokyo, Am I Overpaying?

Hello!

I just moved to Tokyo a couple of weeks ago and am staying for a couple of years to do my masters degree. I have been looking for places to live and have been having pretty bad luck so far due to the fact that I hold a student visa, and I am bringing two cats along for the ride with me (or so the realtor says).

I had a hard upper limit of 150000yen when I was searching, as that's about what my stipend covers, but when I did find places, they would be pretty close to that limit for a pretty pitiful selection which were all relatively claustrophobic to say the least. I definitely understand that living conditions here are different from our countries as foreigners (I'm coming from the US so maybe especially so haha), but it feels like compared to some of my peers I have to pay more for a similar sized apartment.

Recently I found a 1LDK in Kiyokawa (between Minamisenju and Asakusa) charging 160k, and decided to go with it as my time to find a place is running out and I have a good amount saved up from my time in the states. It's pretty big all things considered and has a pretty nice view of skytree at night, but I can't help but thinking I'm overpaying. Wanted to see if anyone here had any experiences or opinions on this (area, finding apartments as a foreigner). Thank you!! 🙂
