Moving to Tokyo in a couple of years. For any expats, how did you acclimate to the move?

I needed some advice as my wife and I are planning to move to Tokyo in a few years to be closer to her family. However, I've only ever lived in the US and while I've done a lot of travel, I'm worried that a permanent move will be extremely difficult for me. I don't really have any friends outside of my wife's family there and while I'm slowly learning the language, I'm worried that my grasp on Japanese won't be enough to really be able to acclimate effectively and I’ll feel extremely isolated.

Don't get me wrong, there's a part of me that's excited about a new adventure and the idea of raising kids in an environment other than the US, but I love my community here. So I guess what I'm trying to ask is:

  1. How did anyone coming from the US develop a sense of community in Japan?
  2. What are some ways you've dealt with moving to a completely different country and culture?
  3. What have been some of your favorite experiences moving to Tokyo?
