Etiquette around asking for extra portions of food

Maybe an odd request, but I have some questions around asking for extra portions, specifically proteins, at restaurants during my stay in Japan:

  1. From what I understand, asking for more rice or noodles is pretty normal, but is it rude to ask for extra meat?

  2. If it's not rude (maybe odd), how would I go about asking for it?

  3. I understand that it might be situational, so as an example… let's say I go to Shinpachi Shokudo and I order a set meal with rice and fish. I don't see fish to order by itself on the menu, is it okay to ask for an extra portion of fish (that I would, of course, pay for if they can accommodate)?
