Haruki Murakami.

Hello, Hola, こんばんは。

I want to share a brief part of an interview with Murakami which took place in 2010 when he collected an award at Santiago de Compostela.

Context: Murakami is often critized for his literature style. Some Japanese philologists say his style is far away from classical authors such as Yasunari Kawabata. He was asked for this debate and he replied:

“It is true that when you look into Japanese literature you want to read works related to the classics as Kawabata, Mishima, Tanizaki, etc… who represents the pure art of Japanese language… but the japanese society is not longer like them…”

Was he referring to say that he is a “modern” writer in a “different” Japan?

What are the thoughts of Japanese society on Murakami books? Is he critized or maintains a good reputation overall?
