Japanese spouse assigned to foreign country, 3 years

Has anyone had their Japanese spouse go on a long term work assignment to a foreign country(not your own country)? What happened with your visa? Did you choose to go with them, go home, or stay in Japan?
1. Was their work able to get you a visa even though you don’t have a Japanese passport?
2. What happened when you came back ie: re-entry, visa expiration and renewal? (My visa expires before we come back so I was told I have to restart the visa process when I return to Japan)

I plan on going with my spouse if the job will allow me to get Visa but I would like to know about other’s experience! 🙂

  1. That would be better suited to whatever country you’re going to. Japan won’t be the one getting you a visa in this case, it’s the target country.

  2. I think your husband should ask at his company. If they’re sending workers internationally, they must have had a lot of experience with their families as well.

I can’t imagine the visa being a problem though. Like they have to incentivize these people to go work abroad. Surely cutting them off from their families wouldn’t help

  3. The one person I know of, kind of a relative, was transferred to the US (term of 2-5 years), and had everything handled/paid for by the company, including attending the visa interviews at the US embassy. The company also moved the all household items, part via air freight and majority via sea. Paid for hotel/suite for about six weeks till they found an apartment (and sea freight arrived), and that apartment is something like 90% paid for. Also paid for is daycare for kids, later any school costs. They flew biz class on the way, and will on the eventual way home, but ‘home visits’ (allowed once a year) are via economy. They bought their own car and insurance, I think health coverage there came with job (typical in US).

  4. My colleague is in the situation. Her hubby is in Singapore and she remained in Tokyo. She’s enjoying the free time she has and has been on a tear with younger dudes to meet her needs. Maybe you can enjoy some free time too.
