Making sure cab drivers always take the fastest toll route?

Noob in Tokyo alert, so thanks for your patience in advance.

Recently I’ve had to take cabs for client meetings, and when the driver asks if I have a route preference I always ask for whatever’s fastest. They still seem to ignore the blindingly obvious toll networks and take the ground level option which takes twice as long.

Is there a simple and clear way to indicate that you want the toll route every time and don’t mind paying? TIA!

  1. Assuming the route needs to use the toll road, just tell them to use kousoku (kousoku tsukattekudasai) after you give the destination. Never had an issue with that. A good driver will ask you.

  2. Keep in mind, the highways might be more backed up than the normal roads. The other suggestion to use google maps or another app is a good idea, so you don’t adamantly demand your way into a 3 hour jam.
