Where can I get the genki textbooks and workbooks for cheap?

On amazon, the 3rd edition Genki 1 textbook and workbook cost around $55 together. Where can I find them cheap?

  1. You can save money if you buy it used. And since they’re on the third edition now, you might be able to find a used copy of the first or second edition for relatively cheap.

Might not be the best idea buying the workbook used though (for obvious reasons)

  2. In Sweden, in a certain physical book store, the textbook is $56 and the workbook is $31, or $87 together.

In the regular online bookstore the textbook is $152 and the workbook is $76, or $228 together. I have no idea why it is THAT expensive, it wasn’t half a year ago…

But in any case, $55 for both sounds pretty cheap to me. Educational books are rarely cheap. (*looks at my book case filled with course books from my master degree in science and engineering, weeping)*.

The best bet to find it cheaper is to look for used, second hand books. Maybe check if there’s any campus book stores with used books or something.

  3. If you are looking for new physical textbooks, use Amazon Japan (unless you live in a country with expensive shipping-I live in the UK)

If you don’t mind it being digital, there are free versions of the textbook online you can use, and then buy the physical workbook due to the nature of it.

In general, you should always try amazon Japan when buying Japanese resources: most products will be cheaper.

  4. Word of caution: I thought I could save money and I bought some bootleg textbook book called “Ganki Zero” which was trying to be Genki, it has an orange cover kinda like Genki but it’s filled with bad photocopies of pages from other textbooks, and even some Korean and Chinese pages.

Avoid trying to save money like that.

  5. There are websites out there that pirates pdfs of books used for college. Some people used that website to pirate the genki books for the Japanese class I was in. Sorry I don’t know the websites but if you Google them you might be able to find it
