4 Days at the end of November – Sendai Region or Nagano?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking into traveling to Japan for a few weeks at the end of November/start of December and am working out a theoretical itinerary. I will have a midweek block that I am looking to use to travel to somewhere I’ve not been yet, and these are the two locations I’m currently torn between: Sendai and Nagano.

The main appeal of both areas is Yamadera Temple and Matushima Bay for Sendai region, and Matsumoto Castle and the Snow Monkey Park for Nagano area, though both main cities look to have their appeal too (though I might choose to stay in Matsumoto if I go the Nagano region)

I’m wondering which area you all think has the most going for it, especially around the last week of November? I’d also potentially be looking at going to an Onsen Town overnight which I know either region offers, though I’m potentially eyeing up Kinosaki for an overnight during another part of the trip.

If anyone has any other recommendations for things to do in those regions as well I’m all ears! I’d be reliant on public transport though which is worth noting. Thank you

  1. Snow monkeys is not worth it if there is no snow. They won’t be in the water, they might not even be there at all until feeding time.
