Working in digital marketing and SEO in Japan

I’ve been working in digital marketing and in SEO for a few years and I am now in a senior role. I speak Japanese, although I’m a bit rusty (I’d say at B1 level, it used to be B2).

I know that finding a job in Japan rn can be pretty impossible because of the circumstances, but to be honest I never saw any job ad in this industry even before the pandemic. Does anyone have experience or can please advise? Thanks 🙂

  1. My GF works in digital marketing in Tokyo, she really loves it as it’s got a much more ‘Western’ style approach i.e. no suits, flexible working time etc.

But, it still has the hierarchy of working levels via age and sex, and her immediate boss is a proper depression session.
But, she loves the actual work.

You could search for things like we we work or on sites like [https://www.daijob.com/en/](https://www.daijob.com/en/)
    LinkedIn is pretty good too.

  2. I’m doing Digital Marketing in Tokyo right now. There are many job posting for this role on LinkedIn, career cross…or even Facebook job search. If you look around for a bit then it should not be too hard to find a few good ones. Of course those jobs are much less abundant compared to tech jobs.

However, with the pandemic going on, your chance of coming from overseas is basically non-existent. Maybe spend your next 1-2 years developing some niches. Various billingual people I know found some success as content writers.

Also, spend A LOT MORE time practicing Japanese. If you can’t do what you’re doing in Japanese, your chance will be much smaller. Get N1.

To share a bit about my job, I got lucky as my company is not too big but full of young people so the culture is really fun and outgoing, without much restriction at all. We can wear casual clothes at work, eat or drink freely… My marketing team is even allowed to have fully flexible schedule, can choose to work from 12 a.m if we want to. The pay and bonus is good enough for me (though still way less than those damn tech jobs!).

  3. My husband works in digital marketing in Japan. Most of the jobs require Japanese fluency and you will be expected to interview in Japanese. You will need to be able to do the job you do now in Japanese. Aside from normal communication, if you’re writing ads, keywords or updating copy on websites you will need to be able to do that in Japanese. You will find these jobs typically in Japanese (LinkedIn or Indeed Japan) or through recruiters. There are ad agencies, but just like ad agencies abroad they are hit or miss and some can have ridiculous work life balance.

If you want to work in Japan then work on your fluency in Japanese. Also you should look into digital marketing trends in Japan because they can differ from other places in the world.

  4. How difficult was finding a digital marketing job in Japan? I’m in high school right now and was actually hoping to do something like that

  5. Cosa sai fare nello specifico? Qui è pieno di account managers incompetenti ma almeno hanno l’N1.
