Getting Nagasaki for my first placement?

I’m probably asking a dumb question and call me out if I am. I keep my religious views very secret and to myself.
I’m a Catholic and would like to attend mass when I’m there. If I can’t due to geographical location, Its okay with me. You can’t always get what you want in life.
My research tells me that Nagasaki is known for Catholic churches.

Reveals their religion on a public forum

What did he mean by this?

But on a serious note, it sounds like you would prefer to be placed in Nagasaki, but would be fine if you weren’t. That’s great, since the JET application lets you put down placement preferences. Just pick Nagasaki as your #1, make like a Catholic and pray you get it!

  2. How many prefectures are there?
    Then check the average turnover.
Then multiply those factors together and you get your chances of Nagasaki.

Then adjust for weighted distribution on number of possible JET ALT positions available per prefecture.

  3. Nagasaki has a history of Catholicism and resultant persecution, yes.

However a quick google shows there are Catholic Churches all over Japan, so you will be able to pray wherever you get placed.

  4. Getting your preferred placement is very hit or miss. Some people get it right down to the city, some people get the prefecture and some people (like myself) are on the other side of the country. (In my case this worked out wonderfully but ESID)

Thay being said even smaller cities like my own have at least one Catholic church usually. And if not, there should be a city not too far away that has one. So regardless of where you end up you should t find it too difficult to find a place to go to mass at least once a week as long as you don’t end up on one of the smaller Island placements. In which case I’ve no idea if many of them have Catholic churches

  5. If you’re not asking for popular places, your chances of getting one of your choices is a lot higher than people than think.

The problem is almost everyone asks for some combination of Tokyo/Osaka/Kobe/Kyoto and then maybe Nara/Hokkaido, maybe Fukuoka at a push.

  6. I have heard Nagasaki is a great place to live as well, beautiful area. Go for it.

Kobe/Sannomiya/Nishinomiya also has a number of Catholic Churches (more than your average Japanese city) and is a great place to live. Consider that an option.

    Good luck!

  7. There are Catholic churches ALL OVER Japan. If you’re in the countryside, you may not have any nearby, but it’s not like Nagasaki has a monopoly on Catholic churches. Getting your top placement is not common.

I would suggest requesting an urban or suburban placement, and if you get in, looking on Google Maps for nearby congregations.

  8. “I keep my religious views very secret and to myself”

“If you are ashamed of me and my gospel I will be ashamed of you before my father in heaven”

  9. pray to thy lord and ye olde shall receive, Jesus Christ, holy father, almighty lord of heaven.

  10. I am currently a incoming Nagasaki Jet but I would say keep in mind that Nagasaki is a very spread out prefecture and lots of Nagasaki Jets are placed on rural outer islands not necessarily near Nagasaki city at all. I will be closer to Fukuoka city than Nagasaki city. That being said Nagasaki is by no means the only place in Japan with Catholic Churches. I studied abroad at Nanzan university in Nagoya which is a catholic university. If your goal is to be placed near a church I would put specific cities down as a request and explain explicitly that you’d like to be near a church. That is the kind of placement reasoning that they may take into account

  11. I’m a departing jet from Nagasaki and it has one of the highest numbers of jets so its worth a shot. There’s even a church in the small town I’m in and I see them a lot while traveling around.
