Advice for American comics professional, conversationally fluent in Japanese, American, who wants to work in manga in Japan?

Hello,

I have a friend who is currently working in comics in the US (has experience as an assistant editor, penciler, inker, for small press and self publish, but also Marvel and DC), who is interested in getting into the manga industry in Japan. She is conversationally fluent in Japanese, but was born and raised in America, and doesn’t know much about the professional, cultural/etiquette, technical expectations and preferences for getting into the manga industry.

Does anyone have any tips, advice or website recommendations she could check out for getting starting on breaking in?

Thank you so much!

  1. If she can save up some money she could go to a technical school that would allow her to work on manga and learn Japanese. It would be a way to get her foot in the door. I think it would be a positive experience. The country is opening up now, and if she has the funds, she could visit some cafes around Tokyo with professional artists’ studios that people can rent by the hour.
