Hello everyone!
I will move to Japan for the next semester and will work as a researcher.
The professor of the chair and my supervisor already made a lot for me and I think it is common to give them a little present at the beginning of our work.
Therefore I search for a present which is not too expensive but is accurate for these two persons.
I‘m from Germany, therefore my first idea for a present is a Faber Castell or Lamy Gift Package (there is e.g. a fountain pen or some pencils inside for about 20USD)
Another idea would be self made marmalade.
What are your ideas ?
Thanks a lot guys.

I definitely recommend consumables over nick-nacks. Space is at a premium in most places.
This is a ranked list of the sorts of things Japanese folks buy as gifts when they visit Germany. It may help inspire you:

Was in a similar position some months ago, just for the parents of my SO instead of supervisors.
I chose to bring consumables:
– local beer and/or wine (duty free allowance: 3 bottles, exceeding it costs “only” 200Â¥/l though)
– Hanuta, Knoppers, Schokowaffelröllchen, PickUp (mini), Nimm2soft
– if coming in winter months: Lebkuchen, Stollen, Spekulatius, (Glühweingewürz, need to translate it or add recipes)
– local specialities from your area (unless it’s fresh milk/meat (-based), that’s a big nono, or Lakritze, guess more or less noone likes this)
Wow these are some great Ideas!
Consumables will maybe bring a little bit more culture with it
Thanks a lot
