  1. Avoiding kanji is going to make finding and using learning material really hard, as well as highly restrict what native material you can engage in. You don’t need to aim to write it to make use of it as part of a holistic learning experience. The longer you put this off, the harder it’ll get. Good luck.

  2. Not writing is fair enough, I’m certainly never going to learn. But do you not plan on reading? The reality is, the written language uses kanji.

  3. People don’t tell you to learn kanji for writing but because you won’t be able to read anything if you don’t. So just learn the kanji

  4. Learn Kanji. Thank yourself later. Even Japanese speech is highly constructed around which Kanji is used in the sentance. Just do it, its not hard.

  5. If you google “hover over furigana anki” you can learn how to style your cards for that. Basically, after you style it correctly, you will be able to hover-over a kanji and it will give you a furigana hint if you need it, but you can (and should probably…) also try to answer it without the hint. On mobile it works by touch instead of hover.

The other things people are telling you are correct (learning kanji is important) but don’t really address your technical issue.

I made my own deck so I can introduce new kanji at my own pace. But I see the value and appeal of downloading these premade decks.

  6. it will be hard for you to advance later on without learning kanji. Kanji not only used for writing but for reading as well. So better to learn it!

  7. You can still use 2k and edit the card format to show the reading on the front instead of word.
    But echoing everyone else,

    > Im not learning japanese to write it so please dont tell me to learn Kanji.

It doesn’t matter. Not learning kanji will have the opposite effect you think, it will slow you down. You will have almost no resources to learn from, and kanji creates connections which helps in learning and remembering words

  8. Good luck finding textbooks without kanji lol

Like damn, imagine if someone was to try and learn English, but without learning to read. What are you gonna do when encounter anything written in Japanese? Pretend to be blind and ask people to read it out loud for you?

  9. Furigana is already on the kanji’s by default, unless you were talking about bypassing the kanjis entirely, which will SEVERELY limit how much you can learn and pick up from future study materials

Some children’s books have no kanji on them, and beginner japanese learning books avoid using kanji in the first few pages, but there’s a reason why most of the study material has kanji in them.

Dont skip learning kanji if you actually want to learn Japanese.
