Is anyone else absofuckinglutely incensed that Uber Eats and other food delivery apps are trying to make tipping a thing here? Like, fuck off, seriously. Pay your damn drivers if they don’t make enough, ffs, but don’t try to bring a shitty practice like that here.
And this is on top of an already egregious markup and service fee! I’ve looked at several restaurants and compared their prices on the apps vs in store. The food is almost always marked up by around 25-35%. It’s insane but what pisses me off about it is the lack of transparency. The burger set is not 1200, it’s 900. The rest is a service charge/delivery fee/whatever you want to call it. Its purpose is to trick people and that’s why I hate it. Take that fee and be clear about it. Then there’s the app’s service fee of 150 yen and then there’s the delivery fee of 300-500. Ffs, what would cost 1200 in a restaurant ends up costing nearly 2000 on these apps. *And then they want that tip on top of all that!* It’s fucking bonkers.
Sorry, had to rant.
I do hope no one here is dumb enough to encourage that tipping bullshit though.

I tip to get preferential delivery speed over the cheapskates.
Uber’s McDonald price is the same as on McDonald own McDelivery service though. I thought it’s a common knowledge that the price itself was already inflated in these delivery services. It was the same in my home country.
The delivery apps are probably all double-dipping, taking a cut from each order whilst also charging service fees to customers. Uber’s model is definitely like this. They take a least 15% of each order’s price, so restaurants have to increase their prices on Uber if they want to maintain their margins.
I think you need to accept this premium if you want to continue using the apps. You have the choice of eating out or otherwise directly ordering from the restaurant if you want to avoid Uber’s premiums.
Many sit-down restaurants in Japan have tipping but it’s just disguised as a table charge or other fee. And that extra money you are required to pay doesn’t necessarily go to the wait staff.
So when Uber asks you if you want to tip the actual driver who brought your food to your door, you have the option to say no.
