Do bandanas/headscarfs have any cultural connotations in Japan?

I’m from LA where wearing certain colors and patterns of bandana will get you looked at weird and occasionally jumped if you do it in the wrong area. They’re mostly associated with bikers and gangers, at least in media, but because of that I always wore bandanas in a headband pattern and not the entire-head covering kind of way. But my hair is getting longer and I like keeping it covered, esp when im working outside.

I don’t see many people wearing bandanas on their heads unless they work in food service or are cleaning stuff. I also see dudes working outside wearing entire towels wrapped around their head (which looks unpleasantly hot, I dont know why they do this.)

Anyways what are, if any, the cultural connotations of bandanas in this country? Can they ever be worn in a semi-professional manner such as in an office or out in the field? Any forbidden styles, colors, patterns, specifically-local customs I should know about?

  1. I haven’t noticed any negative connotations, but I see a lot of older guys, especially bald one, wearing them outdoors or for sports as sun protection.

No idea what reaction you’d get wearing one in an office, but could be acceptable if you go with “business suit”- type colors.

    None, because you’re a foreigner.

  3. Keeps sweat out of your eyes. protects head from sun. The thin ones you can take off, whip in the wind and then wipe your face after the evaporation of sweat cools it.

Absolute must for bald guys imo.
