2 Day Hiking/Ryokan/Onsen Experience

Hi all,

A friend a I have a trip planned to Japan from Oct. 7 – Oct. 18 (already have a visa, etc) and we were hoping to take a short trip out of Tokyo (2-3 hours max) to somewhere to do a long-ish hike (maybe 3-5 hours or so), ideally followed by staying at a nice ryokan, complete with kaiseki and private onsen.

It seems like there’s a handful of good options, such as:
\- Hakone
\- Nikko
\- Kamikochi

I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for any hikes and lodging in those or similar areas for this time of year.

Basic itinerary is:

Oct. 8 – Oct. 11: Tokyo

Oct. 11 – Oct. 13: Hiking/Ryokan/Onsen trip — Location TBD

Oct. 13: Day trip to Shizuoka to meet a friend, followed by train to Kyoto

Oct. 13 – Oct. 16: Stay in Kyoto, day trip to Osaka

  1. Considering you need to go Tokyo → Hiking location → Shizuoka – there are only a few locations that makes sense: Hakone, Izu Peninsula, Fuji Five Lakes, Fuji River valley (Mt. Minobu), maybe Mt. Tateshina or Lake Suwa area.

Kamikochi to Shizuoka would be 5 hour+ treck. Nikko is a bit better (4 hours with two transfers), but still fairly unenjoyable.
