(RANT and PSA) When buying from Sony and using JACCS for installment, do not use your English name

tl;dr,

Make sure to use your Katakana name when dealing with JACCS (the installment contractor when buying from Sony store.)

More details

Entering name on Japanese website has been a huge pain and bugging me ever since I came, today it has just reached a new height with JACCS.

I am buying a camera from Sony and for me there is little reason not to use their interest-free/no-fee installment from JACCS. The application through JACCS was smooth, and they gave you an option to type your English name instead, so I did it. After the application has been finished, I was sent an email to register my bank account for the monthly payment.

I realize now I can only enter my Katakana name. Guess what, now the names are mismatched and I cannot proceed. Obviously their operator did not speak English, luckily I got through their chat with Google Translate.

But the only solution is that they will send me a mail and I have to wait another week. How stupid.

Update1: What ever reason it was, it was declined. I tried again and it was declined immediately, typical behaviour of Japanese banks. Guess I will just save for some moeny and buy the next model.

  1. The name you entered probably needs to match the name on your bank account, which most likely needs to match the name on your residency card. My bank account name was originally in katakana but the government made a new regulation a couple of yours ago requiring banks to use the name that’s on the residency card for foreigners. Now my bank account name has to be entered in full-width romaji to match for transfer payments.

  2. Or just buy it in physical Sony store. I did that and the staff do all the legwork/contacting JACCS/etc. for me.
