Hi! I’m staying in Japan with my family through the middle of december. I was looking at new places to go to since this is our fourth trip and I was wondering if a day trip to Ginzan Onsen and Yamagata from Tokyo would be worth it. It’s quite far but it does look really pretty at Ginzan Onsen during the winter and there seems to be some interesting things in Yamagata that might offset the 8 hour round trip.
The way I was planning it was to leave Tokyo around 8 AM and get into Yamagata around noon. There, I would have lunch in the city and then take a bus to Ginzan Onsen afterwards. I would stay in Ginzan Onsen until around 6:00 PM when hopefully the sun would be down and it would be all pretty. From Google Maps I saw that the last bus leaves Ginzan Onsen around 6:20 PM so I wouldnt want to miss that. I would probably just head back to Tokyo on the Shinkansen afterwards before the last one arrives. Has anyone else made this day trip before?

I dunno- it’s a lot of travel for a very short time there. And having a 6:20 last bus just says the possibility of getting stuck is pretty high. I’d maybe lean Gunma- ikaho or Kusatsu. Not as ethereal but still super pretty and a lot closer.
