Japanese husband and I have agreed to get a city hall divorce, and I’ll be returning to the US next month. We don’t have any assets to split or kids to worry about, so it’s a clean break.
I have a general idea of what I need to do to wrap things up here but would like to hear if I’m missing anything.
1. Divorce and get divorce certificate. I’ve also heard that it’s a good idea to get it translated with an apostille. I checked with a lawyer in the state I’ll be moving to in the US, and they said that my city hall divorce would be valid.
2. Inform immigration of divorce.
3. Tell city hall I’m leaving.
– if someone could explain how to handle taxes, that’d be amazing.
4. I know you can get pension money back but I’ve only been here a little under 3 years and my husband says we never did the pension payments because I made too little. Is there anything I need to do?
5. I don’t have any contracts or anything under my name, so nothing to close or cancel aside from my bank accounts.
Thanks in advance.

Are you a US citizen? AFAIK you can’t get divorced by mutual agreement. Instead you’ll have to go through the family court. Otherwise the divorce won’t be recognised in the US. I’m not American but this is what I have read time and time again, so please look into it.
