Getting remarried in Japan.

I wanted to ask for some help.

I am an American who has lived in Japan for a very…. very long time.

I got divorced 4 years ago from my Japanese wife because divorce reasons.

My current girlfriend who is also Japanese and I have decided to get married (Her 2nd marriage as well.)

My divorce in Japan was super simple, just sign the papers, send it to her, she signs, done. However I never registered the divorce with the US embassy.

I read online that I don’t need to register my previous divorce with the US embassy in order to remarry here in Japan.

That can’t be true right?

Does anyone have any knowledge they can share in this department?

Thanks so much or the help!

  1. おめでとう🎉

You’ll need the certificate from the consulate. They may or may not request to see divorce paperwork. In my case, they asked if I had it. I said I did not. They stamped and handed me the document. Your experience may vary.

Disclaimer: I was married and divorced to another U.S. citizen stateside.

  2. If the mods are going to randomly ban all the other posts asking legitimate questions as “spam”, then apply the rules here as well. I do not remember a single day when this sub did not have a divorce post. Ban the subject, or keep it in a mega thread.
