Apartment AC has black mold. Has anyone disassembled theirs for cleaning, or is a professional service worth it?

I used an aerosol can meant for clearing AC mold (エアコン洗浄スプレー) but I still see a healthy layer of it in the deep areas that the spray can’t reach. I’m wondering if I can take it apart without destroying it. I only see a couple screws on the outer case but I’m holding out on tinkering until I get some reassurances, since some appliances can be fickle beasts.

I found a local cleaning service for around 20k, but I’d rather not spend it if I don’t have to.

Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. I had to do this last week, I hired someone to clean it because I was worried bout doing it myself.I found someone on くらしのマーケット. They were very professional, cost ¥8000 total for one aircon and they did a great job! I recommend searching there.

  2. Those sprays are pretty useless aren’t they.

If you have visible black mold, then there’s probably quite a bit all over the inside. I’ve taken the housing off of my ac unit, and sprayed the unit down with bleach before, but it’s a lot of work. They definitely don’t make it easy to clean. And you also need one of those cleaning covers to catch all the liquid while cleaning.
I’ve also called a professional before (was 1man for me) and it’s so much easier and faster. And fairly certain they cleaned much better than I did, being professionals and all.

I’m still annoyed that ac units aren’t easy to clean as it doesn’t seem like something difficult to redesign to be taken apart easily.

  3. The aerosols only get the fins and not the fans. Get a fan cleaner, too, or get a pump sprayer and cleaning solution off of Amazon that will do the trick. Not the easiest thing to do, though, and it will take at least an hour, so if you’re not confident, paying up is not a bad idea.

  4. So I was a fucking dumbass and I didn’t know that when you pressed off on your AC, the reason the AC doesn’t turn off right away and close its vents is that it’s cleaning itself (if it has that option). For 2 years I thought my AC remote control was just bad or weak so I would double tap power to turn it off ASAP.

Well obviously a ton of dirt and mold built up because of this lol. I also found someone in my local area on kurashimarket who cleaned my AC for 8000. The guy was super chill, just parked his car nearby and brought all his stuff in. Just had to show him the AC and a nearby plug for him to use and he did his thing while I sat in the corner playing games.

Idk how much it really helps but I’ve noticed the airflow is way better and more efficient. The biggest thing is when I look up I don’t see all the mold and dust staring back at me. Highly recommended.

  5. I have successfully disassembled and reassembled an old air conditioner to clean it. It was a very stressful experience and I only attempted it because I was poor at the time. But it was worth it because the air quality got much better.

If you can afford to hire someone, don’t bother trying to do it yourself. You will probably fail unless you already have experience fixing complex home appliances.

  6. My friend did it by himself and it costed him more than 7000 JPY (cleaning tools were ordered from Amazon).
He said that he some parts were still unclean and he’d rather use a service even if it costed him 10k JPY.

I’d also recommend you to use a cleaning service, especially if the unit isn’t yours.
