DJing outside in Tokyo

On YouTube I found a lot of videos of people DJing outside, recording themselves (usually about an hour) and uploading it to YouTube. The videos are usually somewhere outside in nature or in a city park somewhere in Europe. To see what I mean check out Chris Luno on YouTube.

I was wondering if I could do something similar in Tokyo. In the 6-7 years that I’ve been living here I’ve seen some people do that around Yoyogi Park but I can count that on one hand. I assume it’s technically not legal but what is the worst that can happen? That the police will just tell me to stop and go away?

Of course I don’t intend to annoy anyone so I’m thinking of doing it maybe around Yoyogi Park or Shibuya where no one is living and people can join or avoid it if they want to. Maybe Halloween would be a good opportunity because people will be outside partying and it’s gonna be noisy anyway.

Any thoughts, advices, experience?

  1. Well, for one thing, the people that do this are usually _not_ using speakers; they’re just mixing in their headphones.

If you try to use speakers in a park, a) you’re probably not going to have the power to run it for any reasonable length of time (since you’ll have to lug in batteries), and b) you probably _will_ have the cops called on you.

They would probably just tell you to stop and go away, but there’s always the chance it could go more wrong. As a foreign resident, it’s generally a good idea to avoid doing things that have a high likelihood of getting the police involved.
