I’m not actually moving to Japan but I didn’t know where else to ask this so here I am. So I’m currently modeling and my agency wants to send me to Tokyo for a month or two to work and my boyfriend will be coming with me. He’s a tattoo artist so naturally he’s covered in tattoos. He has them on his hands, head, and face as well so he’s not able to hide them. I know tattoos were a taboo thing in the past but I’ve heard times are changing and people are becoming more open to it but I’m just wondering if that’s really true. I figured out in the country it might be more of a problem but we’ll be staying in the city only so I’m hoping people there will be more open minded. My boyfriend is a really kind and respectful person so I would hate for him to be treated badly just for having tattoos.

No
He might not be allowed in some places such as Onsens.
Get ready for the Oji-san stare though. My goodness they just cannot get over my tattoos.
No discrimination for the most part but there are some bath houses/gyms, etc that might not let him use them. That being said, there are also places that allow tattoos. You just need to search before hand. But no, he won’t be discriminated while doing normal things. People recognize it as a part of foreign culture.
