Benefit of point system for PR?

Hello fellow immigrants!
I think that I qualify for PR (JP spouse, more than 1 year in Japan with 5 year visa, stable job with good salary). In fact I have been in Japan since mid 2000s except between 2019 and 2021 where I was on assignment abroad, but more than 1 year has passed since we are back.

Is there any benefit for me to apply via the point system? E.g. speed to get PR, probability… The leaflet is rather vague.
I should get more than 70 points on the technical category. My concern is that they might ask for more documents, challenge the point calculation…

  1. The point system allows you to get PR faster. Normally it takes 10 years, the point system allows you to get PR in 3 years with 70 pts or 1 with 80. But, you are married to a Japanese national, you already have an accelerated PR route. I think it’s 3 years married, 1 in Japan or something.

If you do go the points system, you will need to show proof for every points section.

I think the points requirements is not vague at all. Maybe the flyer is, but there is a spreadsheet on the same page that explains each section. The last page of the spreadsheet also has more details.

  2. This is anecdotal, but I know a few guys who were rejected when applying using the 10 years route, switched to the point system, and then were accepted. Since you can use the spouse route, I guess that won’t be a problem to you though.

  3. If you’ve been married 3 years why bother with points? The marriage rules are actually easier to qualify under than points where immigration might disagree with your calculation.

Also did you maintain your residence in Japan while posted overseas? If so just physically being out of the country doesn’t automatically break your residency.
