Everyone is wearing a mask and it’s annoying

EDIT: Trigger warning…

How long will it take till everyone is gonna stop wearing a mask if that happens at all?

I live in Tokyo and I’ve been always wearing a mask everywhere like everyone else. This year it was really hot and the government even explicitly announced that you don’t have to wear a mask outside but I was still hesitant.

However after finally visiting my family in Europe the first time since Covid I realised that literally nobody cares anymore. Less than maybe 1% were wearing a mask and only indoors. I underestimated how freeing and nice it feels to walk around without a mask (not even chin diaper).

After coming back to Tokyo the difference is so striking. Now I stopped wearing one outside completely (as it’s officially not needed anyway) but it seems like everyone is still wearing one and it’s kinda annoying because of the looks that you get for not blending in or whatever you wanna call it.

It’s like coming to a different world. I wonder if Japans culture will be so much in the way that everyone will keep pressured to wear one and it’s never gonna go away.

  1. It keeps covid infections and deaths down and almost entirely eliminates flu season. It’s a plus for me.

  2. Well, we caught corona recently and it was fucking awful so absolutely *anything* that offers *any* protection worth it to us.

We’re so sorry to have offended you so.

  3. What’s more annoying is the need some people on this sub seem to feel to post this same shit all the time.

  4. A lot of people are starting to quit the act now. I see many Japanese and foreigners alike slowly resisting even on trains in Tokyo. After my recent trip to USA, I feel you. It’s ridiculous at this point and the inconsistency of it all is mind boggling. Don’t feel like wasting any more of my youth in a piece of made in China fiber.

Edit: Done living in fear of corona. コロナを恐れて生きないわ。

  5. You just have to be brave and not worry about them.

If you want to be boisterous about it you could even print the government advice out on a piece of clothing you wear outside. Or, you know, say “fuck em they dumb”.

  6. We were in between waves at one point during the peak of the summer and I didn’t see any more or less folks outside with no mask. So my money is on sometime in the unforeseeable future.

That said, I heard one of the convenience store chains is going to take away the screens at the registers.

  7. Haven’t worn a mask in Japan for the past year. Have actually had people see me not wearing one and take theirs off. Be the change you want to see in the world.

  8. We should have a weekly mask thread. Provisionally limited until the year 2035, maybe? C’mon, automod, you can do it, you really can!

  9. It’s been a few hours since someone complained about people doing things that doesn’t affect them in any way.

Thanks for picking up the slack OP.

  10. Oh boy! Havent seen a mask thread in a while.

I do see what you’re coming from OP.
Went back to my country in may.
No masks and people just going about their business. I was the only one with mask but then at the gym I was like “fuck it”.
After 2 weeks of not wearing one I have to admit it was annoying to wear it again but it is what it is.

I don’t wear it if it’s not a necessity. Mostly because of my skin tbh. My skin is already fucked and with the humidity/mask it’s been 2 crappy years from a “self confidence” point of view.

People can do whatever they please at this point. As long as I don’t have hear anyone mask shaming another person for wearing or for not wearing one. I really don’t care.

  11. I had a walk through Ueno Park over the weekend, and was surprised to see quite a lot of the Japanese people there unmasked. Maybe 40%? Far higher than I see in my everyday life.

I have no issue with people wanting to wear a mask – people can wear whatever they want. But it was nice seeing a lot of smiling faces, out enjoying the good weather. I miss seeing people’s faces – which is now rare, at least outside of izakaya and restaurants (environments where, of course, the virus voluntarily chooses to refrain from infecting people 😏).

  12. I literally couldnt give a shit anymore stopped wearing the mask unless its a really crowded place or some official gov building otherwise not wearing a mask indoors unless some staff ask. So far nobody asked and none of these “dirty looks”, i think you guys are imagining things. Also I keep seeing more and more japanese not wearing a mask inside.

  13. Easy solution to this just remove yourself e.g. return to europe and somehow you will feel the weight of this annoyance lift off your shoulders like magic.
