Japanese language school asking for bank related explanation.

Hey everyone.
I’m from India. And applying for a Japanese language school long term course in Tokyo.

My sponsor is my retired paternal aunt. School is asking about bank balance statement, bank passbook, and retirement benefits explanation for over the decade old transactions. And I have all the explanations and documents already.

Is it okay they are asking this much, nothing shady? Also please tell me few things which I should keep caution of. Thanks.

  1. This is (relatively) normal. The school is asking for financial information from your sponsor because *immigration* requires financial information from your sponsor in order to issue the visa.

In your case, because your aunt is retired they’re going to want to verify that her retirement benefits/pension/whatever is consistent.

  2. They shouldn’t require that much. Last time I went to Japan on a student visa, all they required was a bank statement showing cash. I even submitted it in spanish (because I’m from Mexico) and they didn’t even care.

  3. Hi! I came here as a student also, as you know Japan Immigration is very strict in giving visas, specifically student visas. This process is totally normal when applying to a language school. When I applied, I remember I had to collect all the passbooks of my parents for 5 years to prove that my parents could support my financial needs. Since you are not allowed to work full time, so they need all the financial details.

So I think you’re doing great man. Good luck!

  4. This is absolutely normal in Japan. Japan immigration is issuing a “student” visa, although under certain conditions you are allow to work up to 28 hours a week as a student, they really want you to focus on what you are here for, which is study. A lot of school’s application has a section/page regarding your financial source, from whom and how much you will be getting monthly, as well as how much you will be spending monthly in details as in rent, food etc.
