Residence Card Procedure

Hello guys!

I have a student visa, 1 year 3 months valid, and I am Spanish (i say that because I know most people are from the US).

I will arrive at Narita Airport next 3rd of October however, the residence card procedure is not clear to me. Today I got the visa, and in the Japanese Embassy they gave me a paper with some explanations (guide for Japan Visa and related topics). They told me that I need a picture to be handed out and that all those things are done on arrival, in the same Airport.

However, In the other hand, the Academy I will be attending, gave me another paper in which they defined the procedure as follows: Whenever you arrive at Immigration Control, hand out the “Application for permission to engage in activity other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted” document, and once the procedure is finished they will give you the residence card.

My question is, how does the process of getting the residence card? I mean, can anybody explain the process from I get off the plain to I get off the airport? And do I need an extra picture? Is an empty card and I get to fill it and hand it in the same Airport?

Thanks in advance,

  1. The immigration control agents have a machine that can print out your residence card right there. You just give the documentation + passport to them, if they need to take a photo or fingerprint or whatever they will do that at the checkpoint and then give you your card.

What your school is referring to here is your working permission, not your residence card. You *can* apply for working permission at the airport, but it’s not required.
