Is it normal for elementary age kids nowadays to regularly respond to each other and adults by saying only “死ね”?
I’d always thought that that was a pretty intense expression to use and certainly not something that should be cropping up regularly, has it become much more common or do I just know some bad kids?

Elementary? I don’t hear that very often. Well, let’s face it, I ignore half the crap they are saying to each other anyway, but I’m struggling to recall hearing that. Maybe once or twice as a joke?
Other kids, yeah. It’s a bad word, but kids everywhere love using bad words.
They should definitely not be using it with adults, although as with anything it depends on the way it’s said and the situation
The intensity depends entirely on their facial expressions when saying it
Are you fluent in Japanese/have the whole context of the exchange? It could also be like saying しない.
When they say that to me I feel very annoyed and sometimes angry. When they say it to other kids I scold them. You can think of it as like ‘fuck you’, or ‘go to hell’.
It’s like kids back home saying fuck you to each other I guess. Seeing as Japanese didn’t really have the kind of swear words we have in English. I remember when I was that age, swearing was cool and fun. But I would never have sworn at my parents or I would have gotten a good hiding. Times have changed I guess.
