Lease question – adding someone to a lease?

Hello all, I’m currently in the process of applying to a school for the next April term, and my partner is currently in Japan to start school in October. They’ve just arrived and are currently staying with family while searching for an apartment. We’d like to be able to split some living costs, but as mentioned above I wouldn’t be arriving until late March.

Does anyone have any experience with someone moving in with them/adding someone to their lease? I’d like to know how feasible this might be, if there are any extra costs, etc. I tried searching for some information on this but haven’t been able to find much, so any input is appreciated!

  1. Usually, at least in my experience, there’s only one name on the lease, and then there’s listed cohabitants. It’s simplest to have your partner hold the least and ask to list you as a cohabitant in your absence.

Also, it sometimes better to say you’re engaged as some landlords choose not to rent to people “simply dating”.
