Anyone out there learning programming/web development?

Hi I am in Tokyo and studying web development.

I don’t have the resources for a bootcamp and I don’t think joining one is necessary, but studying alone can be tough. I’d like to connect with others on this journey. If you’re out there please dm me. I hope we can hang out, help each other understand concepts and stay motivated.

I am a 29/m and can speak both English and Japanese.

I started on The Odin Project about 1.5 year ago and am on the full-stack JavaScript track, currently learning to setup dependencies through npm and webpack.
I actually convinced a friend to start with me, but they got an internship in another field so I was “left alone”. To be honest I am kind of anxious about applying for job opportunities.

Also I’d appreciate any infromation on finding helpful communities, or if anyone’s hiring at the junior/intern level, I need only a living wage if that means I can learn alongside real devs.

**TL;DR**

  1. I self taught myself on the job, although I don’t do web dev. I develop and bugfix a software so my languages are python and C++.

Right off the bat, I’d recommend familiarizing with all sorts of software tools like git, VSCode, PuTTY, WinSCP.

Then register for github, leetcode and try to solve problems and do mini porjects and problems there.

I would normally recommend getting a raspberry pi to practice basic networking, GPIO and communication with other devices but they are being scalped now.

  2. It’s difficult, but some jobs do give out coding tests to people with no job experience. Usually a recruiter can help in finding that if you can convince them you’re qualified — Having a portfolio in the form of a web site with projects helps. The tests are nothing to scoff at, though. In terms of Code Wars levels, think of a range from level 7 being the easy questions and level 4 being the harder ones. Having a good background in CS helps.

  3. I’m in a similar situation OP. I’ve been studying for about 1.5 years and went to a bootcamp. Job market for entry level seems to just be really rough right now. I’ve barely getting interviews.

I won’t know as much as u/adamgoodapp but if you want to get another junior’s opinion or teach/learn anything hit me up.

  4. In Yokohama (slowly) learning machine learning. Not web development, but at least there are programming involved 🫢. Feel free to hit me up even given the differences
