Questions about Japan Post banking

My university instructed me to fill out forms prior to going to a Japan Post location and creating a general savings account. However when I went in to a JP location today they handed me a paper with instructions to open a direct plus account and sent me on my way. I understand that the direct plus account doesn’t come with a passbook, but I can’t tell if that’s the only significant difference? And if so is there anything I would want a passbook for? Also is the online banking service available in English?

  1. I like having a passbook.

JP Post online banking is in Japanese only. If you can’t read it you’ll have to rely on browser translations.
