Where do you buy good futons?

We’ve recently been to Akita and the farmhouse there had some amazing futons,

We slept like babies, both of us and our baby… I guess the last figures 🤣

We’ve been thinking to switch from a bed to futons for other reasons, but now I must know, where do you get those really good futons from? What manufacturers are good? Amazon or your shotengai futon shop or brick and mortar store or specialised online retailer?

P.S. would you place your futons directly on the floor (rented apt; plastic that looks like wood), or would you use some kind of mat? I’m not so keep on foam mats though; so a straw/bamboo mat? Would that not leave a mark on the floor when used regularly?

  1. imho brick & mortar store near you is a good choice cause they can survey & made custom size for your need/room if needed. put mat under futon; could use tatami/carpet or just spread of blanket. most of futon can be fold when you’re not using it, so suggest to fold or hang your futon under the sun to keep it dry & clean/wash the mat

  2. I went to a brick and mortar futon store. They specialize in futons, so their futon game is generally pretty good, though more expensive than other places. Worth it for a good nights sleep.

You definitely need to put something down under your futon. We have bamboo mats that are easy to move around and clean, and in the summer I also put these silica gel moisture mats directly under the futon. Fold up the futon during the day, and definitely air it out frequently. The moisture mats should be aired out daily, but they’re very light so I just hang them up with the laundry during the day.

  3. I use sunoko (a type of wooden pallet) under the futon. Without air flow the bottom of the futon gets wet.
