Second hand items are more rare?

10 to 20 years ago the go to place for second hand items was Yahoo auctions. I could always buy and sell pretty much anything I wanted there. Specific brands and products seemed no problem, with a population of 100M there always seemed to be someone selling what I wanted.

Now I can’t find what I’m after second hand. Yahoo is a wasteland of online shops trying to pass off cheap crap. Mercari seems to be half half with shops and private sellers but the range of items for sale is at times surprisingly low. Jimoty is an exercise in frustration trying to find anything other than recycle shops selling their overpriced overstock.

Mercari is definitely the best of the three, but have I missed completely something else?

  1. Yahoo Auctions is good for expensive hobby stuff. Mercari is the best overall platform but it’s strengths are with cheap items and clothing.

  2. Without saying what you’re looking for I think it will be tough to get much in the way of good answers.

One thing that has changed is it is a lot easier for overseas buyers to bid on Yahoo Auctions through middlemen (though perhaps less during COVID…) which has driven up prices and made it hard to find good “buy it now” deals.

ジモティ can have some really staggering deals if your timing is good.
