Taking the Engineering Exam in Japan as a Non-resident

Hi, so since Japan will open to short-term visitors soon, while not having any luck at getting job offers I was searching for work related certificates in Japan suitable as a Filipino Mechanical Engineer with 8 years experience. I’m mostly done with JLPT now.

I found [www.engineer.or.jp](https://www.engineer.or.jp) (The Institution of Professional Engineers, Japan) and upon more detailed reading, a non-resident can apply for the 技術士第一次試験 (Fundamental (First) Examination) as seeing 日本以外 (outside Japan) is an option for the 本籍地 (permanent address) part of the registration form. After looking at the past exams for 機械部門 (Mechanical), I’m quite confident I can pass with a bit of reviewing given the earliest exam I can take will be on November 2023.

Now for my questions if anyone can give me advice:

1. Can passing the exam give me points for “Holder of a Japanese national qualification related to the work ” part of the Highly Skilled Professional Visa?
2. Is there any service that can help me with exam registration (registration seems to be only via mail, and payment can only be done while in Japan) and provide a Japanese address to receive the test voucher and test result and forward them to my native country?
3. Are there any other exams/certifications you can suggest? That exam seems to happen only once a year even so if I can pass more than one category, it’ll need another year.

Thank you for any advice you can give.

  1. >I’m mostly done with JLPT now

Does this mean you have taken (and *passed*) JLPT N1?

More than that, how is your *speed* when it comes to reading/writing in Japanese? The biggest hurdle with taking professional exams in Japan (in Japanese) is ***time***. The time limits for the exams are set based on native-speaker reading/writing times. You can know the material, and know the language, but if you’re not comfortable enough with both to do it *fast* you’re going to run into problems.

Yes, this exam would count for those bonus points.
