What do Japanese leave at gravesites?

Hello I moved to Japan last year and my grandmother lived here for several years back in the day (70s/80s)

I am returning to America for a bit and wanted to leave something Japanese at my grandmothers grave

She is buried in a cemetery in the states. While in Japan I have not seen much more than flowers and incense at grave sites

I can absolutely leave this for her but was hoping perhaps there is something specifically Japanese I can leave at her gravesite. Thank you in advance

  1. Flowers, you see them in the front of pretty much every grocery store, to the point where it’s almost cliche for foreign guys to have given them to their Japanese girlfriends/wives because they had no idea what the flowers are for.

Yes, first valentine’s day in Japan I indeed bought my wife some grave flowers, although the checkout lady did try to explain that I didn’t want to be doing that…

    But that’s it.

  2. As a follow-up question, people often leave offerings of snacks and drinks on graves. What gets done with these offerings? Do they get thrown away?
