Hello, we’re expecting a baby girl soon and are thinking about names that will be good for both Japanese & international situations.
If we choose a Japanese name with kanji, is it possible to choose the romaji spelling when writing up legal documents such as their passports etc? For example we might choose something like アリス with the kanji 明梨澄 or something similar, but on her passport we want to spell it Alice instead of Arisu.
There’s a bunch of other names we’re considering too, but this situation comes up a lot, so I’m wondering if anyone has had any trouble doing so or has had experience getting it right.

Yes, when you apply for a Japanese passport there is a field in the form to request a specific spelling. You can bring the foreign passport with you as a supporting document.
